Aurora Season (Everyone’s Welcome Under the Dome)

Activities to choose from:

Try the Aurora Domes for aurora viewing in comfort. Keep track of northern lights activity from inside two former National Research Council aurora observatory domes now located in a newly renovated building. You will be outfitted with warm northern clothing for when it’s time to step outside to take great photos. Aurora Domes

The Churchill Northern Studies Centre offers a winter “learning vacation”. Get information about the northern sky from visiting experts. Churchill Northern Studies Centre

Wat’chee Lodge is located just outside Wapusk National Park. Accessible by train and mattrack vehicles, this lodge is very popular with photographers seeking images of mother polar bears and their coy (cubs of year) emerging from the winter birthing dens – “a very high cuteness factor”. During this period of time (Feb. 20 to Mar. 15) aurora viewing is often spectacular. Watchee Lodge

There are winter tours of the Churchill West Peninsula just across the Churchill River. Visit two unique camps by bombardier. One has a caribou skin tent and the other an authentic igloo with Inuit guide interpretation and entertainment. Arctic Nature Tours

Churchill has Dog Sledding Trips. A mile ride or a 3 to 4 night camping trip, the choice is there. Friendly dogs, adorable puppies, tents to warm up in and northern refreshments such as bannock with homegrown berry jam are all part of the experience. Wapusk Adventure or Blue Sky Expeditions

Snowmobile Tours (you’re in the driver’s seat)
Try a night tour for a chance to view aurora away from the town lights and hydro wires. A selection of day trips to Prince of Wales Fort, Button Bay or Nowell Lake is also available. Gyrfalcon Expeditions
