| Churchill, Manitoba has earned an international reputation as the Polar Bear Capital of the World. In summer the Hudson Bay ice completely melts and polar bears are forced ashore to scavenge for food and to try and keep cool. Most summers we start to see polar bears coming ashore from mid to late July. Often they will stay along the coast for a few weeks before they head further inland and dig down to the permafrost for a cool summer bed. They enter a state known as a "walking hibernation" and begin the long wait for the fall freeze-up, when they can once again return to the sea ice and hunt seals. | |||||||

| This ice first freezes to the shore at Gordon Point and Cape Churchill, so many bears move towards these coastal locations, except for the pregnant females who seek out their traditional inland denning areas. It is during this time period, from early October to mid November, that nature lovers come to Churchill to see these great white bears gathering along the shores of Hudson Bay. | |||||||
