4 KM / 2.5 Mile Hike from Sloop Cove Historic Site to Prince of Wales Fort.
Take part in part of Churchill’s intricate history on this exclusive Sea North Tours excursion! Learn about life as an 18th century Hudson’s Bay Company Man.
The hike from Sloop Cove is situated a few kilometres from the Fort on the west side of the river. What was once a safe harbour and winter haven for the Hudson’s Bay Co., Sloop cove is now a tundra meadow nestled between rocks with iron mooring rings.
A real treasure is found here; the artistic scrawl of the HBC’s men is 18th century graffiti decorating some of the earth’s oldest bedrock. The signatures etched in this isolated place give memory to a time of trials, perseverance and hope for future generations. These men were sailors, shipwrights, carpenters, captains, labourers and adventurers. Samuel Hearne, a famous northern explorer and HBC governor, left his mark here when he was just 22 years old.
Our guides accompanying you on the tour will be able to paint a picture of exactly what life was like for the men starting out here in the fur trade, it’s an interesting bit of history you won’t want to miss.
Duration of the tour is 3 hours. The hiking distance is 4 km (2.5 mi) and requires good physical mobility.
